This was ascertained after people over at the site (Mobile-Review) bought 10 sparkling new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mobile phones manufactured before February, disassembled them into pieces and checked each of them individually. In addition to this, they even checked the speakers under an electron microscope. Moreover, during these times of economic downturn, they have spent a enormous $4500 in the process.
Nokia has acknowledged the existence of the problem and released a statement that the issue has been sorted now. The release from Nokia's Eurasia PR head states that the vendor for the speakers has been changed. Since this is a recent change, if you faced any issues with your speakers and had got them exchanged from a service center very soon the new speakers too would exhibit similar problems because it has come from the previous supplier.
Only in the last week of January the service centers received fresh stock of unaffected, problem-free speakers sourced from yet another vendor. Therefore despite having change d the speakers you may still have to replace them. Official announcement or next plan of action by Nokia is yet to be announced. Over a million Nokia 5800 XpressMusic mobile phones were shipped prior to January 23; and Nokia is likely to have a big problem to deal with. Nokia might also announce as to which markets have been affected by this problem and how it plans to fix issues with the handsets shipped with the defective hardware.
At present there has been no confirmation whether the shipments to India have been affected as well. But Nokia is expected to come up with a clarification soon. However it is still a good phone and Nokia has acted very quickly and efficiently to stop the issue from spreading further.
