Now you can charge your mobile phone even when there is no power and on the go with sunlight.
Samsung India introduced the world's first solar-powered mobile phone 'Solar Guru' which enables users to charge the battery anywhere the sun is shining, if they are in far-flung areas where there is erratic or even no power supply.
"We have developed this phone keeping in mind the needs of the consumers, especially for people in areas where electric supply is unstable," JS Shin, president and CEO Samsung southwest Asia said on Wednesday.
The Samsung Solar Guru mobile will be launched in the market by mid-June under the company's low-cost 'Guru' series, at a price of Rs 2,799 /-.
Sunil Dutt country head Samsung mobile division said the phone has been developed for India and will be manufactured in India from next month at the Noida factory. Initially, the phone is being imported from Korea".
The phone has been developed based on consumer insights where a rural user can stay connected with family with a affordable mobile which withstands harsh rural environment and serves as an alternative to landlines, where electricity is a challenge.
Speaking after the launch, Union minister for new and renewable energy Farooq Abdullah said, "We need to extend the God-send energy options to many such applications which will benefit people where there are no landlines or power. Solar power is being used increasingly for telecommunications, communication systems, street lighting, in homes and by hotels".
The hybrid solar recharge phone delivers around 5-10 minutes of talk time with one-hour of solar charging when the handset is turned off and sunlight has adequate intensity. The battery will attain full power with about 40 hours of solar charging.
"Solar charging can give you enough time to make few important calls when there is no electricity or you are not close to a plug point," Dutt said. Thats not all. The technology may be extended to high-end phones as well.
Touch screen phones like 'Blue Earth' may soon be launched with the solar-power feature by fourth quarter this year in the country.
Samsung unveiled the solar powered touch screen phone Blue Earth at the Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona earlier this year.
