PDA mobile phones are not as widely marketed as the mainstream handset models purely down to the fact that they are mostly purchased by businesses and professionals rather than the man on the street.
This range of mobile handsets offers far more software options for dealing with office tasks such as email, spreadsheets and PDF presentations and usually feature a far larger display screen for viewing documents as well as in some instances touchscreen technology for menu navigation.
The HTC Touch was the first mobile phone to feature a new navigation technology called TouchFlo, this meant that users could simply run their finger across that screen to flick through their menu and then tap to select an option. The technology negated the need for a stylus which is the traditional way of using a touchscreen device, the stylus is a small stick manufactured from either plastic or metal that is used as a pen would be for touching the screen.
HTC have now upgraded the Touch model and released the Touch Dual, some will argue that it is not actually an upgraded version as ome of the features have been removed but it is the next handset to be released in the range and therefore is classed as an upgrade.
The HTC Touch Dual has lost WiFi capabilities but gained 3.5G HSDPA connectivity on top of the existing GPRS and EDGE Technology. At the touch of a button, a keyboard is revealed beneath the sliding screen with a choice of either a 12 key number keypad or 20 key Qwerty keypad depending on country and operator.
Because of the sliding mechanism, the HTC Touch Dual has also been referred to as the HTC Slide, but its official name is HTC Touch Dual.
As with the HTC Touch version, the Dual utilises TouchFlo technology, enabling users to control 3D images and browse through emails, messages and music files with their fingertip.
The 2.6 inch touchscreen encompasses handwriting recognition with the use of a stylus for those preferring the old fashioned method.
The Operating System as one would expect with today's smartphones, is Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional with Pocket Office and powered by a 400Mhz Qualcomm processor. Offering 256MB of expandable memory, the HTC Touch Dual is equipped with a 2 mega pixel camera with digital zoom and video record and a secondary front mounted camera for video calling.
The Music Player supports both MP3 and AAC audio file formats and USB connectivity makes for easy synchronisation of contacts and calendar entries plus downloading playlists directly onto your mobile from your PC.
Bluetooth Wireless Technology comes with A2DP Stereo support and with Live HTC Home you can view emails, missed calls, messages, weather reports and more with a single button press.
As you can see there have been many improvements to what was a ground-braking handset with added features complimented by a new design. The overall measurements are 107 x 55 x 15.8 mm and the Dual is slightly heaver at 120 grams due to the extra weight of the slide out keyboard.
Users may not be happy with the loss of WiFi but the added 3.5G technology will make for far faster download times essential in todays busy workplace.
